Meet the Sponsors – AllAboutWriting

Allaboutwriting offers courses, both online and face-to-face, that promote good writing. They range from creative writing courses, to programmes shaped around the need for clear and persuasive business communications.

Allaboutwriting was founded by two writing professionals both of whom are passionate about writing.  Jo-Anne Richards is an acclaimed novelist who published her fifth book, The Imagined Child, in 2013. She lectures in journalism at Wits University. Richard Beynon is an award-winning film and television scriptwriter with a long and accomplished career in the local industry. They have developed a range of courses designed to give participants the essential skills of creative writing. These include the flagship Creative Writing Course, available over ten face-to-face sessions, or as an online programme. In addition Jo-Anne and Richard run a mentoring programme for writers tackling works of fiction or non-fiction and screenplays.

In association with specialist trainers, Allaboutwriting runs programmes designed for business which can be tailored to meet the specific needs of individual clients.

Allaboutwriting also runs short courses in journalism.

The fabulous folk at AllAboutWriting very generously sponsored one of their creative writing courses, valued at R5000, to be auctioned in aid of our chosen charity SA Guide Dogs Association for the Blind. We wish the lucky recipient of this bargain buy much success in his writing endeavours.

In addition to the wonderful course donated for the auction, at the beginning of the event, held on Saturday 22nd February, we announced that AllAboutWriting had given us one online feature writing course, valued at R2400, to give away at the end of the day to one lucky delegate. All those interested in winning this lovely course were told to write a short feature, only containing 50 words, about the subject “spices” that they felt could be published in a food magazine. There were some fabulous entries to choose from and I am glad that I handed over that responsibility to AllAboutWriting and didn’t have to do it myself.

The winner, Clare Louise Thomas,  is a freelance photographer based in Cape Town and is dabbling in the art of writing. Her great loves are travel, food, projects working in social change and people. You can see some of her photography work at and

Here is Clare’s winning entry (published with her permission) ~ an evocative piece titled Spice Wanderings and chosen as the winner for it’s narrative quality and for conjuring scents and tastes in words:

As I watch Maria tenderly sprinkle sumac and sesame over her freshly baked flatbreads, the sharp yet sweet aroma drops me straight back into the dimly lit bustling archways of Qatar’s Old Market. My skin is hot, my senses aroused by a complex combination of unfamiliar scents, waiting to be discovered.

Congratulations Clare and we wish you great success with your writing plans.

Special thanks and gratitude to Trish, Jo-Anne and Richard from AllAboutWriting for their very generous contribution to FBI2014.
