As Air Supply sang: “Everybody needs a little time away...”. And it’s true – how we all long for a break from our daily routine, just a weekend away in another world, doing the things we enjoy rather than the things we feel obliged to do. And because we at the Food & Wine Blogger Indaba understand that, we have lined up two incredible auction sponsors for you – both of which will offer you the chance to bid on a luxury weekend away AND do something good for charity by raising funds for our chosen charity this year, the South African Guide-Dog Association for the Blind.

Some of you may remember that last year I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve just outside Gansbaai. Nestled between mountain and sea, the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a five-star eco-paradise showcasing the incredible flora and marine life of the southern tip of Africa. Home of the “Marine Big 5” – whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins; and with unparalleled floral diversity, Grootbos offers you a one-of-a-kind luxury African experience. This also extends to the food which is included in the price and comprises a gourmet 4-course menu in the serene dining room each day. But Grootbos is not only an oasis of luxury – in 2003, the Grootbos team established the Green Futures College on the reserve. This non-profit organisation to train unskilled and unemployed people from the local communities in fynbos landscaping, horticulture and ecotourism with a view to their establishing their own businesses or obtaining employment in these fields – a first in South Africa. The college generates funds through plant sales at its own indigenous plant nursery, as well as a fynbos landscaping business. Through sales achieved over the year, students generate funds to finance the college next year, making the operation self-sustainable.
We are thrilled go announce that Grootbos have very kindly donated the following voucher to be auctioned off in our charity auction:
- 1-night stay for 2 people at Grootbos Nature Reserve,
- full English breakfast for two
- three course lunch or two
- five course dinner for two
- all activities offered on the reserve such as fynbos safaris (except boat trips, spa treatments, beach horse riding and scenic flights)

And if the great outdoors does not take your fancy and you are more of a city girl or boy, then how about this next auction lot: a weekend break at Doubletree by Hilton’s Upper Eastside. Situated in newly-trendy Woodstock, the hotel opened in mid-2013 and is Doubletree by Hilton’s third conference hotel in Africa, offering 183 rooms and 9 flexible conference rooms which can be combined in various configurations and which we will be using for the Indaba. The style is chic and contemporary and would not seem out of place in New York or London. Before and after the conference you can relax in the airy lobby or enjoy a drink in the The Estreet Bar (which offers an extensive list of South African wines, including organic wines), or dine in the on-site Liberty’s restaurant. Or, as I said, the foodie haven of the Old Biscuit Mill is literally a short walk away, as well as the funky art galleries of Woodstock. A free shuttle runs 4 times a day to the V&A Waterfront and Cape Town International Airport is only 15 minutes drive by car. The hotel also offers massage services, a library, a gym, and an indoor pool.
We are thrilled to announce that Doubletree by Hilton Cape Town Upper Eastside have donated the following for our Indaba charity auction:
- a 2-night break for 2 people in one of the Upper Eastide loft suites (pictured above)
- 2 x breakfast for 2 people
