We all love dining out, don’t we? But how often has your dining experience been spoilt by unruly kids at the next table; boistrous (and possibly inebriated!) fellow-diners, or as happened recently, a neighbouring table discussing intimately personal matters at full volume? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just get your own table in a private room, while still enjoying all the benefits of excellent cuisine, a trained sommelier and world-class service?
Well, it seems that dreams can and do come true. Reuben’s at the five star One&Only Cape Town Resort have recently launched the Reuben’s Tasting Table, a private dining experience with a twist. The table is located on the mezzanine level above the restaurant, conveniently located just outside their extensive wine cellar, and separate from the rest of the restaurant. Anything from 6 to 12 guests can be seated at this intimate table and each will enjoy a journey through the various regions of this diverse country, learning about unique ingredients, dishes and culinary traditions and experiencing a variety of wine and food combinations.
Together with Reuben’s acclaimed Executive Chef Reuben Riffel, One&Only Cape Town’s Executive Chef Jason Millar and renowned Head Sommelier Luvo Ntezo have established an inspired epicurean delight with a distinctive South African flavour. Reuben’s One&Only Cape Town restaurant is a brasserie-style restaurant and any notions of an overly formal gathering are dispelled with the introduction of a ‘Lazy Susan’ in the centre of the Tasting Table. A Tasting Menu full of seasonal, edible delights prepared by Jason and his team will be placed on the rotating centre console and guests will be encouraged to share the food ‘family style’ while comparing their opinions of the specially selected wines from the 5000-bottle strong glass encased wine cellar.
The Tasting Menu (R275 per person) includes flavours such as stuffed Peppadews with Goats Cheese, Pine nuts, Tomato Confit and Olive Crumbs; Reuben’s famous Chilli Salted Squid served with mint, basil and sprout salad and a chilli, caramel and lime dressing; cinnamon-laced Lamb Meatballs; and Cape MalayBobotie. Each and every dish on the menu has a story and a local relevance, and of course each is served with a signature Reuben’s twist.
Aside from this uniquely South African flavoured food and wine experience Reuben’s Tasting Table can also be reserved for bespoke food and wine pairing lunches or dinners. Priced at R595 per person, each specially prepared course is served with a wine that partners the ingredients and cuisine style perfectly. A sommelier guides guests through the tasting and comparison process. And for the cheese lover, a specialised cheese and wine tasting featuring a variety of the finest South African cheeses and some five local wines is also available at Reuben’s Tasting Table at R200 per head.
And now for the good part: Reuben’s at One&Only Cape Town have joined forces with the dynamic team behind the South African Food & Wine Blogger Indaba to offer four lucky food bloggers a unique chance of enjoying a complimentary dinner at the Reuben’s Tasting Table. The Indaba is taking place for the third time this year on Sunday 24 June, and on Monday 25 June, Ian Manley of Manley Communications and Colleen Grove of the South African Food & Wine Blogger Indaba will be hosting a dinner at the Reuben’s Tasting Table for a few of the guest speakers, as well as a few lucky food bloggers.
